While they may not be technically "secret", thanks to layers of government-ese in the Social Security Handbook, they are at best ... obscure. To help get you started, Forbes has a list of 29 things you need to know that should help you optimize the benefits you are currently entitled to; it's more complicated that you might think, and certainly more complicated than it should be - but isn't that usually the way of government? The link also mentions some (non-free) software you can use to find out where you stand and how you can improve things.
