The Malware Moving Target

One of the tough things about stopping malware (viruses, trojans, spyware, etc) is that the threat keeps changing; there are lots of ways to infect computer systems; from an infected USB stick, or opening an infected email attachment, or visiting a "bad" website and so on. A newer wrinkle was brought up as a proof of concept at the recent DEFCON hacker's conference; infecting the firmware - the software installed on motherboards and things like network cards. This is particularly insidious because it would not show up in a virus scan of the operating system - the infection is directly on the system hardware.
