When Anitivirus Software Goes Bad

Working, up-to-date antivirus software is pretty vital to safely using a computing device these days. There are some tech mavens who eschew antivirus products, and say that "safe computing" practices are all you need; that's nice, but most of us have no clue what that even means - so we are stuck with antivirus (AV) products. Once in a while though, an update to an AV program will break something and cause problems - and this just happened with Symantec's software, causing some Windows XP systems to "become inoperable". Hmm, that's not good. It's happened before with other AV vendors too, but until we come up with something better than "practice safe computing", AV is still the solution for the rest of us.
