3 Free Android Security Apps

Android-based smartphones and tablets are of course very popular, and as such have become a new playground for malware writers. If you only use Apps from the Google Play Android Market, those are already scanned for viruses; it would be more helpful then if security products also scanned you device's file system too. Many free products have limited features, and encourage you to upgrade to the "premium" version for additional functionality - $30 per year (often billed monthly) seems to be the sweet spot for pricing.

The more features a security product offers, then the more resources it may consume - so it makes sense to try out a few different products to see how it impacts your particular device; if it becomes a slug, or starts crashing, or you see battery life issues, then obviously you would move on to another product.

The free Android Security Apps are listed below - please note the comments and consumer ratings on the links, they may be helpful to you. Avast! has the best virus detection rate, according to this independent test.

Avast! Mobile Security - "Full-featured, top-rated antivirus & anti-theft Android security app."

Webroot Security & Antivirus - "Anti-virus, Internet security & identity protection for Android™ smartphones & tablets. Locates lost or stolen devices, automatically scans apps/files, blocks malware, phishing, SMS spam & more."

AVG Antivirus Free - "AVG Antivirus for Smartphones & Tablets detects harmful apps & text messages ... is a mobile security solution that helps protect your mobile device from viruses, malware, spyware & online exploitation in real-time."
