Data Mining In NYC

Data Mining is something computers can be good at; you take large amounts of data from sometimes disparate sources, and allow computers to analyze it and find useful patterns. In New York City, as we approach another anniversary of the destruction of 9/11/2001, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the City is working with Microsoft on something called the Domain Awareness System. Sounds a little ominous, but as usual the initial intent is good.

Simply put, it’s a huge analysis tool that brings together a lot of the data that the city has in order to make crimes easier to investigate. It brings to bear the extensive network of cameras and sensors that had been put in place to guard against another terrorist attack, and puts it to use in the fight against more common crimes.
