Next Up: Digital Pills

Sometimes it's hard to get patients to take their medications, or at least to take them regularly and correctly. This can be particularly true with long term diseases or those affecting older patients who have to take pills for years. A digital pill (or digestible microchip) is the first ingestible devices approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and their European counterpart. It's job is to signal when medications are taken, and could be a vanguard for other implantable sensors, possibly allowing fewer office visits with the doctor, and thereby saving medical dollars for other things.
