Using Apps To Reel In Customers

Brick-and-mortar retailers are taking to using apps and social media to try to pry away their customers from the siren call of online stores. The apps might show you the best parking spots, the locations of The Good Stuff within a particular store, and so on - using technology to fight, well, technology.

Part of the retailers’ strategy is to slap back at online stores like, which last year used apps to pick off shoppers as they browsed in physical stores. But the stores are also recognizing that shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving need not require an overnight wait in line, a helmet and elbow pads. A smartphone gives shoppers enough of an edge.
