Voting By Smartphone?

A thought-provoking article in the NY Times ask a question that probably seems very obvious if you stop to think about it - why not allow US citizens the option of voting by smartphone? It would surely increase voter participation, which can only be a good thing, and would be at least a partial solution for voters who are housebound or temporarily out of the country. Sounds good, right? It does, but while many of us already do banking and other important stuff online via our little pocket 'puters, voting is a special case with ultimately international implications. The security of the entire process, the need to positively identify the smartphone user and so on all contribute to the level of difficulty. For now, the paper ballot still makes sense, but it's hard to believe we won't break out of that in this digital world.
