Android Smartphones Make Tempting Malware Target

I suspect most smartphone users don't think about malware infecting their phones. "It's just a phone!" they'd say "Phones don't get viruses - computers do." Actually, smartphones are more computer than phone; the phone is just a small part of the whole package. The appeal of the smartphone to the malware writer is that it's relatively easy to trick someone into installing a rogue app that will then start secretly expensive messages to premium-rate SMS services. That's what the most common type of attack involves - your money!

The 2013 Security Threat Report from Sophos revealed that almost 10 percent of Android devices in the U.S. have experienced a malware attack over a three-month period in 2012, compared to about 6 percent of PCs.
