Identity Theft And Health Care Data

While there is a push to digitize patient health data and create EHRs, or Electronic Health Records, there is also a growing risk of such records being  tampered with, possibly resulting in identity theft. The expected benefits of EHRs are greater portability, cost reductions, and better diagnosis and treatment due to the ability to process the electronic data more effectively with powerful data mining software.

Identity theft was previously considered an issue just for consumers, but now it's becoming more of a concern in health care, Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, told eWEEK. "It hadn't been on the radar, and now suddenly health care providers are paying close attention to this issue," said Ponemon.
