Zero Net Energy Home Technology

If buildings are the single largest consumer of fossil fuel (and the gentleman in the video below states that they are), then it makes sense to try to make them as efficient as practically possible, in terms of heating and cooling. While the home shown is obviously going all out to use zero net energy over the course of a year, and is probably not something we could readily do for all homes, it's fascinating to see the tricks and technologies that are used to accomplish this. If I had one question it would be - if a whole neighborhood used geothermal energy, instead of just one isolated home, would it still be a effective technology? Or would the fact that so many people are doing the same thing "upset the balance" somehow (I suspect not, because of the massiveness of the earth, but I'm curious).
