Chinese Hackers? Maybe...

The recent spate of hack attacks on The New York Times and Washington Post have been pretty squarely laid at the door of Chinese hackers, working for the Beijing government or military. Yet some security analysts are now saying the evidence is circumstantial at best, according to this PC World story. For one thing, hackers (Chinese or otherwise) use tricks to obscure the sources of the attacks, such as routing their attacks through many computers in different parts of the world to make it very hard to backtrack to the source. Also, while many of the tools apparently used were of Chinese hacker origin, other countries such as Russia use these same tools or methods. There is not any real smoking gun here (yet), but there is suspicion and possibly motive - the papers were reportedly attacked because of investigative pieces concerning Chinese officials.
