Boomer Retirement Worries

The notion of retirement - the time when you stop "working" for a living and live off your savings - is a thing of the past for many Baby Boomers, myself included. The times they are a-changin', as the song says, and it's a whole new ball game for a lot of people. I am a little taken aback by the really nasty attacks I see online against the Boomer generation from younger people, who for some reason think my generation are all wealthy and that we as a group screwed up everything for them.

While some of us are lucky enough to have a lot of "stuff", it typically took years to accumulate; we didn't run out and spend a big bag of cash over a weekend. As for screwing things up for the younger generation, well things are screwed up - no argument there, although I personally have been too occupied trying to pay the bills to have had much of  a hand in it.

I guess we all need a reason; someone to blame.

Still, the only things you can really do are what people have always done; work hard, save a little as you are able, plan the best you can with the best information you have, and try not to worry. Worry doesn't help a bit, it usually just mucks up your relationships with family and friends - and who needs that?

I don't expect to be able to retire, assuming I make it to "retirement age" (and I try not to worry about that either), so I try to think of stuff I can do to make extra income without driving myself or my wife crazy. We have done office cleaning part time when times were tough and were relieved to be able to get the work, so I doubt my pride will get in the way. My late Dad was a taxi driver and he provided for us, so I guess you just do what you can.
