Remember This? The Slide Rule

An indispensable tool of scientists and engineers - until pocket calculators made them essentially obsolete in the 70's - the slide rule (or "slip stick") is largely just an historical curiosity these days. I actually did use a slide rule for a while at High School in Scotland, but I'd be hard pressed to use one these days. The slide rule allowed quick calculations to be made, involving multiplication, division, square roots and so on. As with the ancient Abacus, (which is still widely used in some parts of the world) a practiced slide rule user can make very quick calculations. The National Museum of Computing has is a large demonstration model of a slide rule:
