Putting It In Perspective

Technological advances are remarkable in many respects, not least of which is the way in which costs tend to plummet over time - think of the first large screen TVs, or the first home computers. A 15MB hard disk drive in the 1980s was almost $2,500, as shown below. That's 15 Megabytes - about the capacity of a ten-pack on 3.5 inch floppy disks - in other words, hardly anything. You could purchase a very nice high end laptop for that these days, with a hard drive literally thousands of times larger than that.

People tend to get confused over Megabytes and Gigabytes, and what it all means. Some time ago, I put together the illustration shown below to try to get the point across. I am most definitely not a graphic designer, so please bear with me on this...
