Remember This? I Love Lucy

Of course you remember I Love Lucy - it has never stopped airing on TV since it's initial broadcasts on CBS! The much-loved sitcom ran from 1951 to 1957 and centered around the fictionalized lives of real-life married couple Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball (Ricky and Lucy Ricardo in the show) and their friends, neighbors and landlords, Fred and Ethel Mertz, in a New York City brownstone.

Apart from the show's enduring popularity (number 2 on TV Guide's list of greatest TV shows, behind Seinfeld), it brought some technical and other firsts to the TV world.

It was one of the very first US TV shows to be broadcast in the UK, and one of the first to use the now-standard 3-camera set up to record the program itself. This was important to accommodate a live audience for the show (again, unusual for the time).

The audience could watch the show unfold, without having to re-shoot close ups and so on. It was also shot on 35mm film - the first scripted TV show of the time to do so - which subsequently allowed it to be rebroadcast as needed, and opened the door for lucrative syndication.

Lucy and Desi had their own production company, Desilu, which produced I Love Lucy and some of the spin off shows - oh, and years later another little show called Star Trek.
