I Have More Megapixels Than You!

Sony is rumored to be releasing a flagship smartphone product later this year with a 20-megapixel camera - so what does that even mean? Pixels are "picture elements", the tiny dots of color that make up digital images. A megapixel means one million pixels. So more megapixels in the camera image sensor means better pictures, right? Well, the smartphone and digital camera makers market it like it does, but it's not necessarily so. The quality of the camera images depend on a lot of components - the lens, the sensor, and the software in the camera as well. Experienced photographers will probably tell you that a well-made 5 megapixel camera might easily run rings around a 10 megapixel one of less quality. You could generally infer that - all other things being equal - a 10 megapixel camera should have the potential to produce better images than a 5 megapixel one, but that's about it. Try before you buy!
