Remember This? Drive-In Movies

During the 1950's and 1960's - when many baby boomers were growing up or already in their teens - the drive-in movie theater phenomenon was at its peak in the USA, with over 4,000 theaters in use across the country, mostly in rural areas.

Some of you may even recall the days before the low-power radio soundtrack transmission, when there were speakers that clipped onto your side window. While very much an American tradition, there are drive-ins in other countries such as Australia, and even some European countries.

When we lived in Northeast Ohio, we had a local drive-in less than 20 minutes away that we visited at least a couple of times a year; it was a lot of fun, I must say. These days, less than a tenth of those 4,000 theaters are still operating.
