What Is With The NSA?

NSA is an acronym you read and hear a lot these days - the National Security Agency has been front and center of a series of revelations about the surveillance of United States citizens and others. Apart from the sweeping nature of the monitoring, the realization that this is not the stuff of the tinfoil hat brigade, but is operating in a well-funded and organized manner is rather...well, frankly, depressing. In the United States, our Constitution expressly forbids (at least, to my understanding) just the sort of all-encompassing "fishing" that is being carried out. Now, of course, this is all being done under the auspices of the Patriot Act, introduced by President Bush after 9/11, and kept going since then. Fine. But why treat us all as potential suspects? One can argue "Well, I have done nothing wrong, why should I care?" You should care because the government agencies are comprised of people, and people are careless, vindictive, unscrupulous and dishonest.
