A Few Steve Ballmer Quotes

Much as people like to, you can't really sum up a person with a few quotes uttered at different times in a long career. People say dumb things from time to time - some more than others, to be sure - but the only thing a collection of quotes may give is a sense of why an individuals' public persona is the way it is. So, here are some quotable quotes from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who announced his forthcoming retirement last week. They give a sense of why he became the "CEO you love to hate" for quite a few partners and pundits alike. While some of these are fairly typical of now-common "spin", some are just good old-fashioned hard-headedness (like the "Vista has never been delayed" quote).

On Apple/iPhone
2004 - “The most common format of music on an iPod is ‘stolen.’”
2007 - “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item.”

On Google/Android
2007 - “I don’t really know that anybody’s proven that a random collection of people doing their own thing actually creates value.”
2011 - “You don’t need to be a computer scientist to use a Windows Phone. I think you do to use an Android phone … It is hard for me to be excited about the Android phones.”

On Vista/Surface
2005 - “Vista has never been delayed.”  [It was. Several times.]
2008 - “Vista is not a failure. Is it something we’d like to improve? Of course. Is it something that with 20/20 hindsight we’d do differently? Sure.”
