Hedy Lamarr And Frequency Hopping

Hedy Lamarr (no, not Hedley) was a well-known Hollywood star in the 1940's, and in a fascinating twist, she had a little-known but influential patent on a technique called frequency hopping, which is a foundation of a lot of today's wireless communication technology. The technique was developed by Hedy and a composer friend, and offered as a Secret Communication System for WWII torpedoes. The whole thing reads like an unlikely tall tale or a fanciful movie plot, but is true enough. You can read the whole story here.
