"No Excuses" Antivirus Software For Windows

There is really no excuse these days for not having a working, up-to-date antivirus on your Windows PC; and despite what the smug know-it-alls may say, most users really do need this type of protection (in any online forum, there is always at least one person who says they have been using computers since 1992 and have never used AV software and have never had a virus - good for them). Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 can all use Microsoft Security Essentials, a basic but effective free offering, although it's recently fallen into disfavor due to poor detection rates. Windows 8 comes with Windows Defender already installed, a rebranded version of Security Essentials. If that does not float your boat, AVG has provided another reliable free product for quite a few years, and the latest version "AVG AntiVirus Free 2014" is reviewed here in PC Magazine. The verdict - works well, and it's also free. If you want even more options, you can refer to Gizmo's update list of free AV software.
