Major Movie Studios Going Digital-Only

The days of movie studios releasing actual celluloid prints of motion pictures for the US market are winding down; Paramount is the first to stop making film prints, and will be distributing movies by digital means only. The Weinstein Company is going the same route, and others are expected to follow pretty quickly. It's much, much cheaper to produce digital copies rather than the traditional ones, but of course at the other end it means movie houses will need to have the digital projectors to be able to show such films. Digital projectors are expensive (often more than $50,000 each), so it may be very tough for some theaters to keep going on their own. Movies are still being shot on traditional film, but are transitioning to all-digital photography too. Either type of movie can be distributed digitally.
