Remember This? Batman TV Show

Before the Batman movies of the past 25 years or so with Michael Keaton, Christian Bale and most recently Ben Affleck playing a brooding and sombre Dark Knight (with the emphasis on dark), baby boomers likely knew him from the TV adventures of the Caped Crusader on the US ABC network.

In what was essentially a live-action cartoon aimed at kids, the Batman TV show of 1966-68 featured Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, the Boy Wonder. They battled all the usual Batman comic book villains of the time like The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler and so on.

The show was high camp, and if approached as such it still holds up pretty well today; there are plenty of ridiculous story lines, super-cheesy dialog and some scenery-chewing turns by old pros like Burgess Meredith and Caesar Romero as Penguin and Joker respectively.

Throw in the always cool Alfred the butler, a still eye-catching Batmobile, and the famous cartoon "POW!" and "ZAP!!" overlays during the fight scenes and you have nirvana for the impressionable 8-14 year olds of the time (like yours truly).
