2016 - The Year Of Virtual Reality

The virtual reality craze is a craze largely in marketer's minds; so far it's been a lot of talk and some proof-of-concept demonstrations of varying success. The Oculus Rift, while perhaps not a household name, is pretty well known even though your can't buy it yet.

The promise is tantalizing though; wearable, immersive 3D virtual reality devices to open up a whole new world of entertainment. The manufacturers will even throw in a bit of education and medicine too, just to sweeten the pot.

Next year however, the virtual rubber should hit the real road (aka the stores). Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive and Sony's PlayStation VR (formerly known as "Morpheus") are all due to be available for us to buy, and others will follow. Actual hardware, with hopefully compelling software.

Most of these are not going to be inexpensive devices, but regardless it's expected that some 20 million VR contraptions will be in our hands by 2020.
