The FBI's advice to companies who have been targeted by "ransomware"? Just pay the ransom to get your data back.
Ransomware is a type of malware - Cryptolocker, for example - that encrypts (scrambles) your data, so that you can't use it unless you pay the bad guys for a software "key" to unlock your stuff.
While the FBI wants you to let them know you are being extorted, they also confess that in many cases they can't really help get your data back.
Well, isn't that special?“The ransomware is that good,” said Joseph Bonavolonta, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s CYBER and Counterintelligence Program in its Boston office. “To be honest, we often advise people just to pay the ransom.”
