Music Album Sales - Now Streaming Has Meaning

Technology keeps marching on, and the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) just announced that the streaming of music will now be counted towards album sales, for the purpose of awarding silver, gold and platinum albums.
The change comes in recognition of the “evolving music marketplace,” according to RIAA Chairman and CEO Cary Sherman.

“We know that music listening — both for albums and songs — is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications,” said Sherman in a press release. “Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today.”
Streaming events will be weighted to give an equivalent to actual album sales; 1,500 streams to be the equivalent of one album sale, but it's a major step forward in the way these things are tabulated.
