Building A Replacement Human Heart

Medical science is not quite at the point where they can grow a human heart in the lab, but they are getting closer than you may think. Ideally a replacement heart would be grown from the patient's own tissue.

Researchers have actually managed to grow heart tissue from donor hearts that were not suitable for transplant use, and they got the tissue to beat like a living heart.
In the end, the researchers hope that they can create individualized hearts for their patients so that transplant rejection will no longer be a likely side effect.
