New, Smaller Pacemaker Gets FDA Approval

A new, smaller pacemaker has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the only leadless pacemaker to be so acknowledged. The Micra® Transcatheter Pacing System is also the world's smallest pacemaker.
The “leadless” pacemaker reduces the potential for medical complications and infections that may arise from a surgical procedure. Another benefit of the non-surgical procedure is that there is no surgical “pocket” under the skin since the device has no leads or wires, no incision scar under the chest and no restriction on the patient’s activities.
