SETI - the non-profit Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - reported this week that they had detected a strong signal that appeared to originate from a star some 94 light years away. While I like a good outer space alien discovery as much as the next Sci-Fi fan, I must report that the thinking now is that the signal actually originated on Earth. Our planet, that is; good old terra firma.
The scientists hedged their bets from the outset, but of course copy writers like to goose these things up a bit and so we all perhaps got our hopes up just a little for a couple of days. Ah, well, no harm done.
Now the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences has concurred, releasing a statement on the detection of a radio signal at the RATAN-600 radio astronomy observatory in southern Russia. "Subsequent processing and analysis of the signal revealed its most probable terrestrial origin," the Russian scientists said.ArsTechnica
