Our daughter works at an inner city charter school for younger kids. Just recently, one of the boys was upset/acting out, and she had to hold him for a little while to calm him down - not restraining him, just comforting and quieting him.
To make a long story short, she found out he did not know what the word "cuddle" meant. It was not so much that he did not know the word (although that may have been the case too), but that he did not understand the concept of someone comforting another person by embracing them.
He is not an orphan, and in fact has many siblings at home.
Does that not make you want to weep - both for that already broken young man and for our future?
