People in general seem to be fascinated by the idea of "mechanical men", humanoid robots who might works for us, fight for us, or otherwise "help us out". Regardless of the potential impact of actual, real-life robots that we are now actually beginning to contemplate, we have been daydreaming about them for centuries.
London's Science Museum has an exhibit this year featuring (mostly fanciful) robots from across the ages - and we have been collectively been thinking about this topic for hundreds of years.
The exhibition features historic robot relics dating back to the 16th century, such as a clockwork monk built for King Philip II of Spain; it still works, though is rarely wound up for the sake of preservation.CosmosMagazine
